Tooth-Friendly Ways to Celebrate Halloween

Halloween is all about tricks and treats, specifically sugary treats. Needless to say, that means it’s not one of the most tooth-friendly holidays. After all, sugar and teeth are far from best friends! Still, there are some dentist-approved ways you can celebrate this spooky season without putting your smile in jeopardy. In addition to brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time and flossing every day, follow these tips:

  1. Create Non-Candy Related Traditions
  2. Binging on buckets full of candy isn’t the only way to enjoy Halloween festivities. Consider creating new holiday traditions that don’t revolve around sugar. You can carve or decorate pumpkins; swap out the goodies you hand out at the door for small toys, glow sticks, and stickers; make homemade family costumes together; watch Halloween-themed movies; read a spooky book; and visit a pumpkin patch!

  3. Limit the Candy Snacking
  4. Rather than grazing on sweets all day, limit candy to mealtimes. Not only does this reduce the amount of time teeth are coated in sugar but the extra saliva production with chewing other foods can help wash away the sugar.

  5. Drink Lots of Water
  6. All the trick-or-treating, Halloween parties, and fall festivities can take up a lot of energy! Keep yourself and your children hydrated while hopping from house to house and activity to activity. Water will help wash away any food particles on your teeth that could increase your risk of cavities. Keep in mind that it’s best to drink plain water instead of sugar-rich soda and juice.
