5 Signs of Periodontal Disease You Shouldn’t Ignore

Gum disease doesn’t always make a loud entrance. It often starts quietly, which is why many people don’t realize there’s a problem until it’s advanced. But catching the signs early can help prevent long-term damage—and possibly save your teeth.

Here are five common signs of periodontal (gum) disease to watch for.

    1. Bleeding Gums

If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, don’t brush it off as normal. Healthy gums shouldn’t bleed easily. Often, bleeding is caused by a buildup of plaque and tartar near the gumline. Once tartar hardens, it can’t be removed at home and creates an ideal spot for bacteria to thrive.

    2. Gum Recession

Are your teeth looking longer than they used to? You may be experiencing gum recession. As gum tissue pulls away from the tooth, it can expose the roots—leading to sensitivity and a higher risk of decay or infection.

    3. Persistent Bad Breath

Everyone has bad breath occasionally, but if it’s lingering even after brushing, it could point to gum disease. Bacteria beneath the gums can release unpleasant odors that mouthwash alone can’t mask.

    4. Swollen or Tender Gums

Inflamed, red, or puffy gums are a clear sign that something’s not right. Healthy gums are usually light pink and firm, not sore or shiny.

    5. Loose or Shifting Teeth

In more advanced cases, periodontal disease can damage the structures that hold your teeth in place. If your bite feels different or teeth seem loose, it’s time to get checked.
